A chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has said former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is facing the consequences of some of his past actions against others.
Galadima made the remarks during an interview on the Symfoni TV programme, while commenting on El-Rufai’s ongoing legal troubles and detention.
“El-Rufai himself is paying for what he has done to other people, I believe so,” Galadima said, while questioning whether the issues surrounding the former governor’s detention were politically motivated.
He added, “But that does not mean that the issue that led to his detention is politically motivated. Why did they arrest him?”
Galadima also claimed that he had previously warned El-Rufai to be cautious about his conduct and had advised him to remain outside Nigeria after the relationship between him and President Bola Tinubu deteriorated.
According to him, he even approached former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and asked him to persuade El-Rufai not to return to Nigeria from Egypt. Galadima said El-Rufai initially postponed his return before eventually coming back to the country.
The NDC chieftain further criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging that the party was desperate to retain power ahead of the 2027 elections.
He claimed that the APC could resort to “anything under the sun” to remain in power because, in his view, its members were aware of the consequences they could face if they lost an election.
Galadima’s comments come amid continued political tensions surrounding El-Rufai, who left the APC and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 2025 after falling out with the ruling party. His allegations and characterisation of the political situation remain his own claims and have not been established as facts.
