A mild drama unfolded at the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Kaduna State on Saturday after the microphone was taken away from the Minister of Works, David Umahi, while he was addressing President Bola Tinubu and other party leaders.
The incident occurred as Umahi was speaking at the rally attended by Tinubu, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, his wife and other prominent APC members.
In a video circulating on social media, the minister was heard addressing the President with words of respect before requesting that he officially commission a major road project.
“With all humility, our dear President, our dear President and father, I request that you come over here to officially commission this very important route,” Umahi said.
However, before the minister could complete his remarks, another individual took the microphone from him, abruptly bringing his speech to an end.
The unexpected interruption has generated reactions on social media, with Nigerians expressing different opinions about the incident. While some users mocked the minister over the manner in which his speech was interrupted, others criticised what they perceived as disrespectful treatment of a senior government official.
One social media user, Frank Opara, questioned why an individual described online as a special assistant would take the microphone from the minister while he was speaking.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identity of the person who took the microphone and the reason for the interruption, were not immediately clear in the reports available.
Neither Umahi nor the Presidency had publicly explained the incident in the reports published on Sunday.
The incident occurred during the APC’s campaign rally in Kaduna, where party leaders gathered to demonstrate support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The video has since attracted attention online, with the interruption becoming a talking point among Nigerians discussing the event and the conduct of political officials at the rally.
