The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted two 40-foot containers carrying suspected illicit drugs valued at approximately ₦3.67 billion at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

The substances, comprising Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, as well as Cannabis Indica, were concealed among imported used vehicles and automobile spare parts, according to the Customs Service.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Oscar Ivara, disclosed the seizures in a statement on Friday, October 9, 2026, saying the operation was carried out in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Ivara said the first container was intercepted on September 2, 2026. A joint physical examination by Customs and NDLEA officers reportedly uncovered 890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies weighing 598.08 kilogrammes.

The container also contained two used vehicles: a 2008 Mercedes-Benz and a 2012 Nissan Infiniti.

The second container was intercepted on September 16. According to the Customs Service, it contained 1,207 packages of Cannabis Indica weighing 603.75 kilogrammes, alongside two used Toyota Sienna vehicles, two Toyota Corolla vehicles and used engine spare parts. The drugs in the second container were valued at approximately ₦3.62 billion.

The combined weight of the seized substances was 1,201.83 kilogrammes, with an estimated street value of ₦3.67 billion, the agency said.

Customs Area Controller of the Tin Can Island Port Command, Joseph Anani, attributed the interceptions to intelligence-led enforcement and cooperation between the two agencies.

He said the seizures highlighted attempts by suspected smugglers to exploit containerised cargo and legitimate commercial shipments to transport prohibited substances into Nigeria.

The seized drugs have been handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and appropriate action within its statutory responsibilities. The agencies did not announce any arrests in connection with the consignments in the reports published on Friday.

Anani commended the officers involved in the operation and warned importers, licensed customs agents and freight forwarders against using legitimate trade as a cover for illegal activities.

He added that the command would continue strengthening surveillance, intelligence gathering and cargo inspections to detect prohibited goods entering the country through the port.
