Veteran Nigerian entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has reacted to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s description of him as an “ashawo” during the London launch of his memoir, 999.

Obasanjo, who served as the chief host at the September 29 event, was captured in a viral video jokingly referring to Charly Boy with several colourful descriptions, including “thief,” “barawo,” “drug addict” and “ashawo.”

The remarks generated reactions on social media, with some Nigerians questioning what the former president meant by calling the entertainer “ashawo.”

However, Charly Boy said Obasanjo was not accusing him of prostitution, explaining that the remarks were part of the familiarity and affection between them.

In a post on X on Friday, the entertainer said he had been given various names throughout his life because of his unconventional personality and lifestyle, adding that Obasanjo had simply added another name to the list.

Charly Boy said he viewed the public teasing as a sign of affection, noting that Obasanjo had also spoken positively about his relationship with his late father, Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, and his mother.

He also recalled that Obasanjo wrote the foreword to his memoir and had previously hosted the Nigerian launch of the book.

While accepting the joke in his characteristic humorous style, Charly Boy said he did not agree with the “ashawo” description.

The entertainer’s response has further highlighted the long-standing familiarity between him and the former president, whose interactions have frequently included playful exchanges and public banter.
