Suspected bandits have killed a resident and abducted nine people, including his wife and two children, during an attack on the Babban Saura community in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, October 1, as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence Anniversary, when the gunmen reportedly invaded three houses in the community.

A community source told the News Agency of Nigeria that the attackers first invaded the residence of an elderly man and abducted two of his children.

The assailants reportedly moved to the residence of a man identified as Sikiru, broke through the fence and entered his compound. Sikiru allegedly attempted to resist the attackers and struggled with some of them before he was shot and killed.

The gunmen then reportedly abducted his wife and two children.

The attackers also invaded a neighbouring residence, where they abducted a woman identified as Maman Mubarak and her four children.

The commander of the local vigilantes, Usman Adamu, confirmed that nine people were initially abducted. He said the vigilantes received a distress call and alerted soldiers, who joined them in pursuing the attackers.

According to Adamu, the security personnel traced the bandits towards the Eastern Bypass area and succeeded in rescuing Maman Mubarak, while her four children remained in captivity. The other abductees were also still being held by the attackers as of the time of the report.

Another resident, who identified himself as Anas, said Sikiru had called him after the attackers stormed the community.

When a NAN correspondent visited the area, sympathisers had gathered at the deceased resident’s home, while residents expressed concern over the security situation.

The latest attack occurred days after suspected bandits reportedly invaded nearby Kadaure community, where a man was killed and cattle were allegedly rustled.

The Kaduna State Police Command had not issued a statement on the latest attack as of the time of reporting, with its spokesperson, DSP Mansur Hassan, reportedly unreachable for comment.
