The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has urged residents to reject politicians who fail to respond to calls and messages from the people they seek to govern.
The monarch gave the warning in a statement on Sunday, stressing that effective communication between public office holders and citizens is essential to good governance, transparency and accountability.
Akinyemi cautioned traditional rulers, chiefs, politicians, civil society organisations and voters against supporting candidates who deliberately make themselves inaccessible to the electorate.
According to him, failure by public officials to communicate with citizens can create an “information vacuum” that may destroy public trust, fuel misinformation and undermine political legitimacy.
He said citizens who are unable to reach their leaders could become suspicious of their motives, while silence from public officials may create room for rumours, conspiracy theories and politicised narratives.
The monarch also warned that communication gaps could have more serious consequences during emergencies by escalating crises, causing public panic and undermining compliance with government directives.
Akinyemi maintained that responding to calls and messages should be regarded as a basic responsibility of anyone holding or seeking public office.
He therefore urged Ogun voters to carefully scrutinise candidates ahead of the 2027 elections and reject any governorship candidate or other aspirant, regardless of social status or political affiliation, who consistently ignores the people they seek to lead.
The monarch had previously called on Ogun residents, the media and civil society organisations to thoroughly examine the records, competence and backgrounds of all candidates seeking to govern the state in 2027, saying voters should look beyond party affiliation and ethnic considerations.
