The United States Embassy in Abuja has stopped processing routine visa applications, directing applicants to the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos for such services.
The change took effect on August 1, 2026, as part of a broader realignment of U.S. visa operations across Africa. The U.S. Department of State has designated Lagos as Nigeria’s regional hub for routine visa processing.
The embassy reiterated the development in a recent advisory, stating that routine visa services are now available only at the Consulate General in Lagos.
However, applicants who already had appointments scheduled in Abuja have not been left out. The embassy said their appointments would still be honoured, although some dates may have been rescheduled. Those affected have been advised to check their email for updates concerning their new appointment dates.
Applicants with an unused and still-valid Machine Readable Visa fee receipt can also use the receipt to schedule a new appointment at the Lagos consulate.
