The United Kingdom has condemned what Germany described as an attempted Russian drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, as tensions between Moscow and Berlin escalate following accusations of Russian involvement in the incident.
The British government expressed full solidarity with Germany after Berlin formally accused Russia of orchestrating the attempted attack, which occurred at the airport in eastern Germany on August 4.
German authorities said an explosive-laden drone was discovered in the secure area of Leipzig/Halle Airport near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft. The device was subsequently defused after the airport’s runways were temporarily closed.
Germany’s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said police investigations, intelligence findings and the pattern of the incident led the government to conclude that Russia was responsible for what it described as a hybrid attack. German officials said the operation appeared to involve Russian state-linked actors providing equipment and expertise to individuals recruited to carry it out.
The British government described the alleged attack as “egregious and reckless” and said Europe must remain united in responding to Russian attempts to undermine European security and support for Ukraine. The UK also joined other European governments in expressing solidarity with Germany.
The incident has prompted Germany to take a series of diplomatic and security measures against Moscow. Berlin has summoned the Russian ambassador and announced plans to close Russia’s Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin. Germany also plans to introduce tighter measures targeting Russian nationals and push for additional European Union sanctions.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Moscow should not believe it could carry out such activities without consequences, while Interior Minister Dobrindt described Germany as being subjected to a continuing campaign of hybrid warfare.
The German government has linked the Leipzig incident to a wider pattern of suspected Russian sabotage, espionage, cyberattacks and other disruptive activities across Europe. Officials say the objective of such operations is to weaken European support for Ukraine and undermine confidence in Western institutions.
