At least 10 people have been killed and about 40 others reportedly abducted after suspected bandits attacked Tofa community in Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

The attack reportedly occurred during the night, with the assailants invading the community and opening fire on residents.

According to reports citing security analyst Bakatsine, at least 10 residents were killed while several others sustained injuries during the assault.

The attackers also reportedly abducted dozens of residents, with local sources estimating that between 38 and 40 people may have been taken away. However, the exact number of abducted persons was still being verified at the time of reporting.

The bandits were also said to have rustled a large number of livestock and looted properties belonging to residents before leaving the community.

The latest attack has further heightened concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Sokoto State, where rural communities continue to face attacks, killings and mass abductions by armed groups.

Sokoto is among several North-West states that have continued to record significant levels of insecurity. A recent security assessment by Eons Intelligence recorded 37 security incidents in the state in August alone, placing Sokoto among the states with the highest number of incidents during the month.

The incident also comes amid growing concerns over the spread of kidnapping-for-ransom activities across the North-West, with vast rural areas and difficult terrain providing hideouts for armed groups.

Residents of affected communities have repeatedly called for stronger and more sustained security deployments, arguing that delayed responses often allow attackers to operate for extended periods before security personnel arrive.

As of the latest reports, there was no official statement from the Sokoto State Police Command confirming the reported casualty and abduction figures.

The reported figures may therefore change as security agencies and community sources establish the number of people killed, injured or taken away.

The latest incident has renewed calls for authorities to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks in rural parts of Sokoto State.
