President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of Peter Onwubuariri, Assistant Director, Media, at the Presidential Villa, describing his passing as a painful loss to the Presidency, the media community and Nigeria.
Onwubuariri, a veteran journalist and former staff member of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), died in Kano on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 48.
In a condolence message issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu commended the late journalist for his professionalism, dedication and commitment to public service.
The President described Onwubuariri as a dedicated journalist whose calm disposition and professionalism earned him the respect of colleagues and associates.
“His years of service to three administrations are a testament to his competence, integrity and commitment to duty,” Tinubu said.
Onwubuariri joined the Presidential Villa in 2014 and subsequently served on the media teams of three successive administrations — those of former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari, as well as President Tinubu.
Before his posting to the Villa, he had built a career at NAN, where he rose through the ranks and served as an Assistant Editor-in-Chief. He also previously worked as the agency’s North American correspondent.
The President said Onwubuariri’s passing would be deeply felt across the Presidential Villa, NAN, the media fraternity and the country, noting his contributions to journalism and national service.
Tinubu extended his condolences to the deceased’s wife, Catherine, his three children, extended family, friends and colleagues, while praying that God would grant them the strength to bear the loss and grant the deceased eternal rest.
