Three women have been killed and 10 others injured after a vehicle plunged from the Long Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The crash occurred at about 5:24pm on Friday near Mikano on the Long Bridge, inward Lagos, according to the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi.
Akinbiyi said the accident involved three vehicles: a white Toyota bus with registration number KJA 247 YM, a white Toyota Corolla marked BDG 867 HG and a white Mazda bus with registration number AGL 891 XX.
A total of 16 people were involved in the crash, comprising 12 males and four females. Ten people, including nine males and one female, sustained varying degrees of injuries, while three female adults died in the accident.
According to the TRACE spokesperson, preliminary information from eyewitnesses indicated that excessive speeding and loss of control were responsible for the crash.
The affected vehicle reportedly somersaulted before plunging from the bridge into a ditch, resulting in the multiple casualties.
Emergency responders were mobilised to the scene to evacuate the victims and manage the situation. Those who sustained injuries were attended to following the crash, while the deceased were also evacuated from the scene.
The accident caused a temporary disruption to traffic flow on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as emergency personnel worked to clear the wreckage and attend to the victims.
Akinbiyi said normal traffic movement was eventually restored after the evacuation operation was completed.
The latest crash adds to the growing concerns over road safety on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of the country’s busiest highways, where serious accidents have repeatedly been recorded.
Authorities have continued to warn motorists against speeding, reckless driving and other behaviours that can increase the risk of fatal crashes.
