South African police have discovered the body of another woman in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, bringing to 10 the number of women whose bodies have been found in the municipality over the past two months.
The latest victim was discovered on Saturday in the Tembisa township. Police said the body was found near a cemetery, with local reports stating that the woman was partially clothed. Her identity has not been released.
Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said investigators were at the scene and that further details would be provided after preliminary investigations.
“At this stage, we can only confirm the discovery of the body,” Muridili said.
Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni said the woman appeared to have been stoned to death, although a post-mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of death. He said a team of investigators had been assigned to the case.
The discovery follows the deaths of nine other women in Ekurhuleni since July. Most of the victims were in their 20s and 30s, while some were reportedly found partially or completely undressed and showed signs of sexual assault.
Police have not confirmed that all the deaths are connected. Two women were recently arrested and charged in connection with the ninth victim, whose body was found on September 17. Police said that particular case may have stemmed from a relationship-related dispute, while investigations into the other deaths continue.
The series of deaths has sparked concern and renewed calls for stronger action against gender-based violence in South Africa, where violence against women remains a major national concern.
