Nigerian Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has opened up about a recent heartbreak after a woman he wanted to have a serious relationship with told him she was not ready for commitment.
Rema made the disclosure during a livestream with streamer Okiki on Friday night, where he discussed the inspiration behind his recently released song, Oh No.
The 26-year-old singer said he approached the woman because he wanted a serious relationship, but she declined, explaining that she was not ready to commit to one person.
According to Rema, the woman told him she still wanted to experience life as a single woman and was not ready to leave the dating scene.
“The song was inspired by a lady I wanted a serious relationship with, but she said she still wants to be on the streets,” Rema said.
He said the experience became the inspiration for Oh No, which was released on September 11 and explores themes of attraction, uncertainty and mixed signals in a relationship.
Rema also reflected on his rapid rise to fame, saying he has been taking time to reassess his life after becoming famous at the age of 17.
“Everything moved so fast,” the singer said, noting that his experiences over the years have prompted him to slow down and reevaluate different aspects of his life.
