The Kano State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of popular political commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state.
Dan Shagamu was reportedly attacked at his home on Monday night after unknown assailants allegedly forced their way into the residence. He was later rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital, Kano, where he was confirmed dead.
According to the police, the command received a distress call from the commander of the Gaida Vigilante Group at about 11:30pm, prompting officers from the Kumbotso Police Division to respond to the scene.
The two suspects were subsequently arrested during an intelligence-driven operation involving the Kumbotso Divisional Police Officer, tactical units of the command and community stakeholders.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are being interrogated, while investigators are obtaining statements and conducting forensic procedures to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.
The police said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend any other persons who may have been involved in the incident.
Dan Shagamu’s death has generated widespread concern, particularly because the commentator had previously raised an alarm over alleged threats to his life. In a video shared before his death, he reportedly appealed to the Kano State Government, the Emir of Kano and security agencies for protection.
Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation, while Amnesty International Nigeria also urged authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The Kano State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, expressed sympathy to the deceased’s family and assured residents that the command would pursue the investigation to its logical conclusion.
The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist investigators in uncovering the circumstances surrounding the killing.
