The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old woman, Ogechi Ofoma, over the alleged brutal abuse of her seven-year-old daughter, Oluebube Ofoma, in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The child was reportedly rescued on Sunday, September 13, 2026, after security personnel from Ibollo Community, Awada-Obosi, and concerned residents intervened following reports of the alleged abuse.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command received a report of alleged child abuse and severe bodily injuries involving the girl on Sunday evening.
Preliminary information indicated that the child had allegedly suffered severe physical abuse, including injuries reportedly inflicted with a hot knife. The mother was subsequently arrested, while police commenced an investigation into the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has also directed that the child receive urgent medical attention and appropriate welfare support. The police are collaborating with the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare to ensure the victim’s protection and wellbeing.
The police command commended the community security personnel and residents for their prompt intervention, saying their actions helped prevent further harm to the child.
Authorities said the investigation would be thorough and that anyone found responsible for the alleged abuse would be held accountable in accordance with the law.
The case comes days after another woman in Anambra was arrested over separate allegations involving the sexual abuse and exploitation of her underage children, highlighting renewed concerns over child protection in the state.
