President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has accused former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of making what he described as “reckless” claims about Federal Government investment in sports.
Onanuga made the comments in a post on X on Wednesday while reacting to Obi’s call for increased government investment in Nigeria’s sports sector.
“Headlines don’t lie like Peter Obi lies, recklessly,” Onanuga wrote, while questioning Obi’s record on sports during his eight years as governor of Anambra State.
Onanuga alleged that sportsmen and women in Anambra were poorly treated during Obi’s tenure, adding that athletes with disabilities were also treated “shabbily.” He said Obi’s record in the sector was documented in the state’s archives.
The presidential aide also questioned Obi’s recent call for greater Federal Government investment in sports, arguing that the former governor should consider his administration’s record before making such demands.
Obi had recently called for increased investment in sports after attending a Nigeria Premier Football League match between Ikorodu City and Enugu Rangers at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos.
The former governor said Nigeria had abundant sporting talent but needed greater investment and commitment to turn the sector into a source of opportunities for young people.
Onanuga’s comments are the latest exchange between the Presidency and Obi, who is campaigning for the 2027 presidential election under the NDC.
The claims about Obi’s record in Anambra were made by Onanuga and were not independently established in his statement. Obi had not, at the time of reporting, publicly responded to the latest criticism.
