First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has announced a ₦500 million relief package for victims of the recent fire disaster at the SPAR shopping mall in Calabar, Cross River State.
Tinubu announced the intervention on Friday during the launch of the South-South phase of the National Community Food Bank Programme in Calabar.
According to the First Lady, President Bola Tinubu approved ₦25 million for each of the 18 business owners affected by the August 22 fire, amounting to ₦450 million, to help them recover from the losses suffered in the incident.
“Mr President commiserates with the government and people of Cross River over this unfortunate incident that destroyed many businesses and livelihoods,” Tinubu said.
She explained that the intervention was intended to provide immediate financial assistance to the affected business owners and support them as they begin the process of rebuilding their businesses.
The August 22 fire at the Calabar SPAR shopping mall destroyed several businesses, leaving traders and other business owners with significant financial losses.
The relief package is expected to assist the affected entrepreneurs in replacing damaged goods, restoring their businesses and recovering from the economic impact of the disaster.
In addition to the money earmarked for the fire victims, the First Lady announced a separate ₦50 million donation to women’s groups in Cross River State. She also disclosed that ₦15 million had been given to women who welcomed her to the state.
The announcement came as Tinubu officially launched the National Community Food Bank Programme in the South-South geopolitical zone.
Three food banks were launched simultaneously in Cross River State as part of the Federal Government’s effort to tackle food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable Nigerians.
Tinubu said the programme was designed particularly to support children under six, pregnant women and lactating mothers by providing them with nutritious food and other assistance.
