Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has revealed that online bullying and the backlash faced by people who expressed different political views influenced her decision to publicly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election.
Akintola made the disclosure during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where she criticised Nigerians for attacking people over their political choices.
The actress said she became particularly upset after witnessing the treatment meted out to veteran actress Joke Silva over her support for Tinubu.
According to Akintola, the criticism of Silva became so intense that she decided to publicly declare her own support for Tinubu, despite anticipating that she could face similar backlash.
“I supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last election because Nigerians annoyed me with their bullying,” Akintola said.
She recalled the backlash against Silva, saying, “They bullied Aunty Joke to the point that someone wrote something that was so inhumane. So, I made a video and said, ‘I’m also supporting Tinubu, kill me, let me see if you can change my mind.’”
Akintola said political disagreements should not result in harassment, arguing that Nigerians have the right to hold different political opinions.
“Nigerians are annoying. Don’t bully other people. We have our rights to differences of opinion,” she said, adding that people should be free to support whichever candidate they choose.
The actress maintained that although people might disagree with her choice, her support for Tinubu was her personal decision and one she was entitled to make.
