Irish authorities have arrested a 39-year-old Nigerian businessman, Edwin Omokhuale, over an alleged €19m fraud involving an Australian mining company.
Omokhuale was arrested by officers of An Garda Síochána at Dublin Airport on Thursday as he was preparing to board a flight to Paris. His arrest followed a warrant issued by the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency in connection with the alleged fraud.
According to reports, the alleged fraud occurred in early 2023 and involved approximately $23m, equivalent to about €19m, being transferred from the Australian mining company to accounts allegedly controlled by the fraudsters.
Omokhuale, who was living in the UK when the alleged offence occurred, is wanted over money-laundering allegations connected to the case.
Irish authorities are expected to bring him before a Dublin court as extradition proceedings begin to return him to the UK, where he is expected to face the allegations.
The arrest is part of a cross-border investigation involving authorities in Australia, the UK and Ireland. Investigators are examining how the funds were allegedly diverted and the role of those involved in the scheme.
Omokhuale has not been convicted of any offence and remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
