Veteran Nigerian entertainer and social commentator, Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has said his two daughters do not need his approval to live as lesbians, stressing that his primary concern is their happiness.
Charly Boy made the disclosure in an interview with Saturday Beats, where he spoke about his daughters’ sexuality and the criticism that followed his decision to discuss the matter publicly.
The entertainer said his younger daughter came out as a lesbian several years ago, while his older daughter recently identified as one. He acknowledged that accepting the news was initially difficult for him, particularly because his older daughter had previously been married and had children.
According to Charly Boy, however, he eventually accepted their decisions because he believes adult children have the right to make choices about their own lives.
He said, “If she decides that she no longer likes men and prefers to be a lesbian, so be it. My only concern is for her to be happy.”
The 75-year-old entertainer said his approach to parenting has evolved, particularly with younger generations. He argued that parents can advise their adult children but cannot dictate how they should live.
“As a parent, I’ve learnt that with millennials and Gen Zs, you don’t tell them what to do; you can only advise and try to get them to see the logical side of what you’re putting across for them to take, leave or trash,” he said.
Charly Boy also said he did not want disagreements over his daughters’ choices to damage their relationship, stressing that his love for them remained unchanged.
The comments come days after he publicly reacted to reports of one of his daughters’ engagement to her female partner, saying he had no “remote control” over the life of a 50-year-old woman and that she was entitled to pursue her happiness.
