Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has challenged Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to join the All Progressives Congress if he intends to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 presidential election.
Lawal spoke in an interview with Channels Television’s Inside Sources on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The governor said the position of APC governors on Wike’s Rainbow Coalition remained unchanged, arguing that the minister should clearly define his political allegiance ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Our message is very, very clear: Be on one side. You can’t be in two sides,” Lawal said, adding that Wike should either support the APC fully or leave the coalition.
Asked whether the governors were asking Wike to join the APC, Lawal replied, “Exactly. What’s the essence?”
The disagreement centres on Wike’s support for Tinubu’s re-election while he remains a member of the Peoples Democratic Party. Wike has maintained that his support for Tinubu at the presidential level does not prevent the PDP from fielding candidates for governorship and legislative elections.
Lawal said he would raise the matter with Tinubu, stressing that Wike’s political position needed to be clearly defined.
The Zamfara governor also criticised Wike’s recent remarks about some APC governors, including his description of them as “lazy,” saying the FCT minister knew the people he was referring to.
The dispute comes as political parties and alliances begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Wike’s Rainbow Coalition continuing to attract attention from politicians across party lines.
