Suspected gunmen have attacked a vegetable market in Mangu town, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing at least three people and injuring several others.
The attack occurred on Friday night as traders and buyers were preparing to close for the day. According to the President of the Mwaghavul Development Association, Bulus Dabit, the attackers opened fire on a vehicle leaving the market at about 8pm, killing two women and a young man.
The shooting triggered panic among traders and customers, with many people reportedly running in different directions. Several others sustained injuries during the ensuing stampede, while victims with serious injuries were referred to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment.
Dabit said the identities of the three people killed had not immediately been established. He condemned the attack and called on security agencies to deploy intelligence and technology to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The latest incident occurred hours after the Mwaghavul Development Association raised concerns over renewed attacks in Mangu and called for immediate action to protect residents.
There are conflicting reports on the death toll. While Premium Times and other reports put the number of people killed at three, DailyPost reported that five people died in the attack. No official casualty figure had been released by the Plateau State Police Command at the time of reporting.
The attack adds to continuing security concerns in Mangu, which has experienced repeated violent incidents in recent years. The Plateau State Government has previously urged residents in affected communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing information that could help prevent further attacks.
