A fire outbreak on Monday gutted the Nigeria Customs Service Western Marine Command office in Apapa, Lagos, destroying property worth millions of naira.
The fire reportedly started at about 10:23am following an electrical surge in the conference room before spreading to other sections of the building, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Officers on duty initially made efforts to contain the blaze before personnel of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at about 10:45am to assist with the firefighting operation.
The incident occurred shortly after Timothy Jonah assumed duty as the Deputy Comptroller of the command, taking over from his predecessor.
Jonah described the incident as unfortunate, saying he had just resumed when the fire broke out.
“I just resumed duty to take over, only to witness this fire outbreak,” he said.
He said the command would constitute a committee to investigate the cause of the fire and determine the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
Jonah commended the Customs personnel who responded to the incident and worked with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service to contain the blaze.
He also said measures would be introduced to strengthen safety protocols at the command and prevent a recurrence.
Authorities have not reported any deaths or injuries in connection with the incident. The extent of the damage and the full value of property destroyed are expected to be established as the investigation continues.
