The Federal Government has paid $100,000 each to members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.
The cash reward was part of the incentives promised by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the team after they secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title in August 2025.
D’Tigress defeated Mali in the final in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to extend their dominance of African women’s basketball and become the first team to win five consecutive editions of the competition.
The latest triumph also took Nigeria’s overall AfroBasket title tally to seven, having previously won the championship in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023.
In addition to the $100,000 cash reward, each player was allocated a three-bedroom apartment and conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Members of the 11-man coaching and technical staff were also rewarded with $50,000 each, alongside housing allocations and national honours.
The government’s reward recognises the team’s continued success on the continent and their growing impact on Nigerian sports.
The D’Tigress have also made history beyond Africa. Under coach Rena Wakama, they became the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach the Olympic quarter-finals after their impressive run at the Paris 2024 Games.
Their latest AfroBasket victory further cemented their status as the dominant force in African women’s basketball and earned Nigeria qualification for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.
