The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has criticised the state of Nigeria’s primary healthcare system, saying the country cannot build a “new Nigeria” while citizens continue to die from preventable illnesses.
Obi made the statement on Monday while reacting to what he described as the failure of the country’s primary healthcare system to adequately serve Nigerians, particularly those in rural and underserved communities.
The former Anambra State governor argued that primary healthcare should be the foundation of an effective national healthcare system, noting that citizens should be able to access basic medical services without travelling long distances or facing prohibitive costs.
He said the continued deaths of Nigerians from conditions that could be prevented or treated with timely medical attention demonstrated the urgent need for greater investment in healthcare infrastructure, personnel and essential medicines.
Obi stressed that improving healthcare must remain a priority if Nigeria is to achieve meaningful human and economic development, adding that a healthy population is essential to building a productive society.
He has repeatedly made healthcare investment a key part of his political agenda, alongside education, security and economic production, as he campaigns ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party is now seeking the presidency under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, with the 2027 election expected to feature increased debate over the state of Nigeria’s public services and the economy.
