Dubai has declared a 10-day period of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, younger brother of Dubai’s Ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
Sheikh Ahmed died on Monday at the age of 76, according to the Dubai Ruler’s Court. The court announced that flags across the emirate would be flown at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which began on Monday.
Sheikh Mohammed, who is also Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, paid tribute to his brother, saying he would remain in the family’s prayers and hearts.
The UAE President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, also extended condolences to Sheikh Mohammed and the Al Maktoum family, describing Sheikh Ahmed’s contributions to the development of the UAE as significant.
Sheikh Ahmed held several senior positions during his career, including serving as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security. He was also involved extensively in business, sports and horse racing.
He served for decades as president of Al Wasl Sports Club and was associated with the development of the club from its early beginnings. He also played a prominent role in Dubai’s horse-racing industry and chaired ARM Holding, a private investment company.
The 10-day mourning period will run until October 1, with flags remaining at half-mast across Dubai as the emirate pays tribute to the late member of the ruling family.
