The Department of State Services has alerted Muslim and Christian leaders in Osun State to an alleged plan by terrorists to attack worship centres, markets and other public gathering places in an attempt to disrupt preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The warning was issued during separate meetings with Muslim and Christian leaders in Osogbo on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The security agency reportedly informed the religious leaders that terrorists were planning to move towards the South-West and cause violence aimed at creating fear and discouraging voter participation.
According to the information shared at the meetings, the suspected attackers could target churches, mosques, markets, schools and other locations where large numbers of people gather.
The President of the Osun State Muslim Community, Alhaji Mustafa Olawuyi, confirmed that the DSS had briefed Muslim leaders about the threat. He said the agency warned that some politicians and terrorists were allegedly working towards frustrating the 2027 elections by creating insecurity and voter apathy.
The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Osun State, Pastor John Adeleke, also confirmed receiving the security briefing. Religious leaders were reportedly instructed to strengthen security arrangements and remain vigilant around their places of worship and other facilities.
The DSS warning comes amid broader security concerns over the spread of terrorist activities from northern Nigeria towards the southern part of the country.
Reacting to the development, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke said he would convene a state security council meeting to assess the threat and coordinate appropriate measures. He also urged residents to report suspicious movements or individuals to security agencies without delay.
