An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan has restrained the state government, the Emiolu Ruling House and kingmakers from nominating or installing a parallel Aresaadu of Iresaadu in Surulere Local Government Area.
Justice K.A. Adedokun issued the interim order on Tuesday in Suit No. HOI/6/2026, following an application by Oba Abraham Oyerinde, the Aresaadu of Iresaadu, through his counsel, Mr S. Raji.
The court specifically barred the respondents from “nominating, appointing or approving any candidate” for the Aresaadu chieftaincy or taking any related step pending the hearing and final determination of the motion on notice.
The development followed allegations by Oba Oyerinde that the Oyo State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters had initiated moves to appoint another monarch despite existing court proceedings.
The monarch had, on September 6, appealed to Governor Seyi Makinde and Acting Governor Adebayo Lawal to intervene, alleging that the ministry had written to the chairman of Surulere Local Government in September 2025 and again in September 2026 to commence the process of nominating a new Aresaadu.
Oba Oyerinde maintained that the alleged appointment would amount to installing a parallel monarch while he remains on the throne.
The latest court order is expected to halt the nomination process until the substantive legal issues surrounding the Aresaadu chieftaincy are determined.
