Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has lamented the rising cost of food and worsening purchasing power among Nigerian households under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Atiku made the remarks in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Thursday, amid continued concerns over the cost of living and food prices in the country.
The former vice president said many Nigerian families were struggling to afford basic meals, arguing that the economic situation had placed increasing pressure on household incomes.
He attributed the hardship to what he described as the economic policies of the Tinubu administration, which he said had resulted in higher prices for essential goods and reduced purchasing power.
Atiku has previously criticised the administration over rising food, fuel and transportation costs. In a statement earlier this month, he argued that Nigerians needed immediate relief from the cost-of-living crisis rather than further appeals for patience.
His latest comments come against the backdrop of continued food affordability concerns. The International Monetary Fund reported in June that conditions remained difficult for many Nigerians, with an estimated 27 million people having faced food insecurity in late 2025. The IMF also warned that higher food and transport costs could continue to weigh on economic activity and worsen poverty and food insecurity.
Atiku, who is preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election on the ADC platform, has made the cost of living and food security central themes of his criticism of the Federal Government.
The Tinubu administration has defended its economic reforms as necessary measures to address longstanding structural problems, while acknowledging that the reforms have caused significant short-term hardship. President Tinubu has previously said his government was taking steps to improve food availability and affordability through agricultural support and other interventions.
