The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi chapter, has suspended its four-week-old “No Pay, No Work” strike over unpaid allowances.
The union commenced the strike on August 12, 2026, following a dispute over the payment of its members’ Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Professorial Allowance.
In a statement, the branch chairman, Terseer Abari, said the university had paid the Consolidated Academic Staff Salaries and the Earned Academic Allowance components of members’ salaries.
However, the union said the CATA and Professorial Allowance had only been paid for January and February 2026, while just 39 per cent of the CATA for March had been paid, which it regarded as an underpayment of members’ salaries.
The union said the decision to suspend the industrial action followed progress made in resolving some of the issues that prompted the strike.
Consequently, members were directed to resume their official duties from Friday, September 11, 2026.
The development comes as ASUU at the national level continues to raise concerns over unpaid salaries, allowances and the incomplete implementation of the December 2025 agreement between the union and the Federal Government.
The national leadership of ASUU has separately warned that public universities could face another nationwide strike if outstanding issues affecting lecturers are not urgently resolved.
