Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 27 Task Force Brigade have arrested nine suspected drug dealers and recovered various illicit substances in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The suspects were arrested on September 19 during an operation by troops of the Brigade’s Garrison aimed at disrupting criminal activities and preventing terrorists from gaining access to illicit drugs. They were subsequently handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Yobe State Command.
The suspects were identified as Hassan Ibrahim, Ahmed Mohammed Shuwa, Adam Jibril Jakadi, Musa Aga, Mohammed Mohammed, Isa Adamu, Usman Salisu, Mohammed Abiso and Buba Kambari.
The Army said recovered exhibits included suspected cannabis sativa, tramadol, codeine, “soak and die”, “master patch” and other illicit substances. Two mobile phones and N85,900 in cash were also reportedly recovered during the operation.
Speaking during the handover, Major A. Balogun, who represented the Commander of the 27 Task Force Brigade, Brigadier General M.S. Mukhtar, said the operation was part of efforts to disrupt criminal networks and cut off access to illicit substances that could create an enabling environment for terrorism and other violent crimes.
Receiving the suspects and exhibits, the NDLEA Deputy Commander of Operations in Yobe State, Garba Yakubu, said the handover demonstrated the continued collaboration between the military and the anti-drug agency.
Yakubu said the NDLEA would examine the recovered substances and take appropriate legal action against suspects found culpable.
The development comes as security forces intensify operations against terrorist and criminal networks in Yobe and other parts of the North-East. The military also reported separate arrests and the surrender of suspected terrorists in operations conducted across the state between September 15 and 22.
