Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has defended the cross-party Rainbow Coalition, insisting that his primary political focus is to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in the 2027 presidential election.
Wike made the remarks on Monday in Abuja while speaking with journalists after inspecting ongoing road projects in the Federal Capital Territory.
The former Rivers State governor dismissed allegations that the coalition was created to destabilise existing political parties, describing the claims as baseless.
According to Wike, the coalition is an initiative involving individuals from different political platforms who support the Tinubu administration and are willing to mobilise support for the President ahead of the 2027 election.
“My primary concern is whether Tinubu will be re-elected for a second term, and I have made it known from the onset that I am going to support Mr President with all my might and strength,” he said.
Wike said the coalition was not an arrangement with the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressing that members of different political parties could support Tinubu for the presidency while their respective parties field candidates in other elections.
He had similarly stated last week that his support for Tinubu’s re-election did not mean the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not contest governorship, National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections in 2027.
The minister also referenced the G5 governors’ role in the 2023 presidential election, questioning why similar concerns about political destabilisation were not raised at the time.
The development comes amid criticism from some APC governors, under the aegis of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, who have expressed concerns about the Rainbow Coalition and its potential implications for the party and its candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
