The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has promised to introduce a monthly living minimum wage of N500,000 for Nigerian workers if elected president in the 2027 general elections.
Sowore also pledged to provide 24-hour electricity and make education free and accessible at all levels as part of his party’s agenda for the 2027 election.
The activist and publisher made the commitments in an interview with Independent, where he outlined what he described as the African Action Congress’ plan to transform Nigeria.
Sowore said Nigerian workers could no longer survive on what he described as “starvation wages,” arguing that workers should receive incomes that reflect the rising cost of living.
“We are proposing a ₦500,000 monthly living minimum wage because Nigerian workers cannot continue receiving starvation wages,” he said.
On electricity, the AAC candidate promised to deliver 24-hour power, arguing that a serious industrial economy could not continue to depend on generators.
He also pledged to construct one million public mixed-income homes and reform tenancy laws to reduce the burden of advance rent payments, while promising to expand healthcare access and industrialise the country.
Sowore further said his administration would massively expand agricultural production and processing, rebuild infrastructure, create jobs and reform the security sector through better compensation, modern technology and intelligence gathering.
The AAC candidate also promised an aggressive anti-corruption campaign, including efforts to recover public funds allegedly stolen by political officeholders.
Sowore is among the 18 presidential candidates formally announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 election.
His latest promises come as the 2027 campaign season gathers momentum, with presidential contenders outlining economic and social programmes aimed at winning voters ahead of the election.
