The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is set to inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections, with its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, given the authority to nominate key officials.
The party disclosed this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, following consultations between Obi, Kwankwaso, National Leader Henry Seriake Dickson and other party leaders.
According to the NDC, Obi and Kwankwaso will nominate the Director-General, Deputy Director-General (North), campaign spokesperson and deputy spokesperson, Head of New Media, Finance Director and Deputy Finance Director, among other officials, in consultation with the party leadership.
The party said its leadership had given the presidential candidate and his running mate a “free hand” to make the nominations as part of efforts to create what it described as an inclusive and cohesive campaign structure.
The NDC said a comprehensive organogram for the campaign council had been prepared since August and submitted to Obi and Kwankwaso for their input. It added that nominations had also been received from stakeholders across the country.
The inauguration was initially scheduled for the first week of September but was postponed. The party attributed the delay to Obi’s travel schedule and said the council would be announced and inaugurated after the candidates submit their remaining recommendations.
The development follows a recent disagreement between the party and the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement, a support group backing the two candidates. The movement had unveiled a separate 59-member campaign structure, but the NDC subsequently dissociated itself from the announcement, saying only the party leadership could constitute and announce its official Presidential Campaign Council.
On campaign financing, the NDC said funds raised would be paid into a dedicated presidential campaign account and managed by officials nominated by Obi and Kwankwaso alongside the party’s National Treasurer.
The party said the arrangement was intended to promote transparency and accountability and ensure compliance with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s reporting requirements under the Electoral Act.
The NDC has also begun preparations for the mobilisation and training of polling agents. State and local government party officials have been directed to work with candidates and stakeholders to compile lists of agents for National Assembly, governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
