The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has commenced the establishment of a 13-member executive structure in every polling unit across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central, has disclosed.
Umeh made this known while speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he explained that the initiative was part of the party’s preparations to ensure adequate representation and protection of its votes on election day.
According to the lawmaker, the party’s constitution provides for what it calls Polling Booth Executives, with each polling unit expected to have 13 members dedicated to election-related duties.
He said the structure would make it easier for the party to produce polling agents across the country and ensure that no polling unit is left without NDC representation.
Umeh also disclosed that the NDC had fielded candidates for all elective positions being contested in the 2027 general elections, arguing that having candidates across constituencies would strengthen the party’s grassroots presence.
“When you have candidates, they mobilise agents,” the senator said, stressing that the presence of candidates would help the party establish a stronger network at polling units.
He said the party was particularly focused on protecting its votes by ensuring that its agents are present when results are declared and entered into the prescribed electoral forms.
Umeh further said the NDC would have representatives transmit polling-unit results to the party’s situation room after the results had been officially collated and declared by electoral officials.
He maintained that such an arrangement should not be interpreted as a parallel result collation system, but rather as an internal mechanism for monitoring the party’s performance and protecting its votes.
The lawmaker also called for stronger measures to prevent electoral malpractice, including the prosecution of electoral offenders and improved deployment of personnel by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He advocated greater reliance on INEC’s permanent personnel as returning officers rather than depending heavily on ad hoc staff during elections.
With political parties already intensifying their preparations for 2027, Umeh said the NDC was determined to build a nationwide grassroots structure capable of ensuring that its candidates and agents are represented across the country’s polling units.
