The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has expelled two former members and House of Assembly aspirants, Ganiyu Kolawole Egunjobi and Azeez Yusuf, following their defection to the Allied Peoples Movement.
The state APC Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, announced the expulsion on Wednesday, accusing the two politicians of anti-party activities and disloyalty.
Egunjobi, a former chairman of Agege Local Government, contested the APC nomination for Agege Constituency I, while Yusuf contested for Agege Constituency II. Both failed to secure the party’s tickets and subsequently obtained APM tickets to continue their bids for the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly election.
Ojelabi said the party invoked Article 9(5)(II) of the APC Constitution, as amended in 2022, in taking disciplinary action against the duo. He maintained that members who lose internal nomination contests should either accept the outcome or pursue redress through established party channels.
The APC chairman further declared that Egunjobi and Yusuf were no longer authorised to speak for, represent or conduct any business on behalf of the Lagos State chapter or the national party.
The expulsion followed the politicians’ earlier decision to leave the APC. Egunjobi and Yusuf had defended their defection as an independent decision, alleging “grave injustice” in the handling of the party’s primary elections. They also denied that Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa influenced their decision to leave the APC.
The dispute dates back to the APC’s nomination process for the two Agege constituencies. Reports indicated that Egunjobi and Yusuf had initially emerged from the party’s primaries, but subsequent changes to the candidate list saw other aspirants listed for the seats.
