Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that all his children supported Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, during the 2023 general election.
Wike made the disclosure on Monday during an appearance on TVC News’ Journalists’ Hangout, while discussing the political dynamics surrounding the 2023 election and preparations for 2027.
According to the former Rivers State governor, his children supported Obi amid the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress’ Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima.
“In 2023, there was a problem with the Muslim-Muslim ticket. There was this campaign about Christianity. All my children supported Peter Obi,” Wike said.
He, however, claimed that his children now have a different view of Obi, saying they later told him they had not known the former Anambra State governor “was like this.”
Wike also argued that the political circumstances surrounding the 2023 election had changed ahead of the 2027 presidential contest. He said the controversy over the same-faith ticket no longer carried the same weight, claiming that President Bola Tinubu had addressed the concerns it generated.
Wike’s comments come as Obi, now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), prepares to contest the 2027 election, while Wike has continued to publicly support Tinubu.
The FCT minister also discussed the role of the former G5 governors in the 2023 election and their opposition to the presidential candidacy of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. He said the group adopted a strategy aimed at preventing the PDP from dominating the South-South.
Wike’s remarks are his account of his family’s political choices and the political strategy of the former G5 governors; they do not independently establish the views of his children or the broader electorate.
