Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66.
Hassan reportedly died at about 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a battle with stage-four cancer. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional Instagram Live session, while veteran actor Jide Kosoko also confirmed the news.
The development comes only days after Ogogo’s daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, publicly appealed for urgent medical assistance for their father. The family had disclosed that he was battling stage-four cancer and that doctors had said chemotherapy could no longer be administered because of the severity of his condition.
The actor’s death also comes just five days after his family dismissed an earlier social-media report claiming that he had died. His daughter Lima had described that report as fake and urged the public to stop spreading unverified information.
Born Taiwo Hassan in Ilaro, Ogun State, on October 31, 1959, Ogogo became one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba-language Nollywood. His career spanned more than four decades, during which he worked as an actor, filmmaker, producer and director and reportedly featured in more than 300 films.
His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, political figures and fans across Nigeria, with many mourning the loss of a major figure in the Yoruba film industry.
According to a burial announcement by Jide Kosoko, Ogogo’s remains were taken to his hometown, Ilaro, Ogun State, on Sunday. A lying-in-state ceremony was scheduled for Monday, August 24, while the Ilaro Muslim Community announced funeral prayers for 10 a.m. at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground.
Ogogo leaves behind a legacy spanning generations of Nigerian cinema, particularly within the Yoruba film industry, where his distinctive acting style and long career earned him a devoted following.
