Veteran Nigerian journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, has died at the age of 56, throwing the country’s journalism community into mourning.
Oladipo reportedly died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after suddenly taking ill at his office in Lagos. His death was confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), where he previously served as president.
According to reports, Oladipo had appeared to be in his usual state of health earlier in the day before becoming unwell at his office. He reportedly sought medical attention but later died at a hospital. Some reports have suggested a suspected heart attack, although the exact cause of death had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
Oladipo was the founder, publisher and managing editor of The Eagle Online and the Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited. He had nearly three decades of experience in journalism, working with major Nigerian publications including Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, The Sun and PUNCH, where he served as Politics Editor.
Beyond traditional journalism, Oladipo became an important figure in Nigeria’s growing digital media industry. Through The Eagle Online, he helped build a platform covering politics, business, crime, entertainment and other major national issues.
He also served as president of GOCOP and was later recognised as an emeritus president of the organisation. Current GOCOP President Danlami Nmodu confirmed his death in a message shared with members of the guild.
The founding president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), Oladipo was also serving as the organisation’s president before his death. Its General Secretary, Nkanu Egbe, described his passing as a devastating loss to both the cooperative and Nigerian journalism.
Tributes have since poured in from journalists, media organisations and public figures who described Oladipo as a committed professional, gentleman and influential figure in Nigeria’s media industry.
