Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has criticised Nigeria’s legal profession, saying law can no longer be regarded as a noble profession in the country.
VeryDarkMan made the remarks on Friday while responding to criticism of his appearance at the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The activist was invited as a panellist at the conference, where he spoke about insecurity and shared his experiences of visiting communities affected by violence and killings. His participation, however, attracted criticism from some lawyers who questioned the decision to invite a social media personality to the event.
Responding to his critics in a video shared on social media, VeryDarkMan said he attended the conference to represent Nigerians who, in his view, often do not have the opportunity to speak in elite spaces.
He said he spoke on behalf of poor Nigerians and people without a voice, questioning why his presence among lawyers had generated such strong reactions.
VeryDarkMan then turned his attention to the legal profession, dismissing the argument that law should automatically be regarded as a noble profession.
He argued that many trained lawyers in Nigeria struggle to find employment or are unable to practise law, describing the profession as one of the poorest in the country.
The activist also questioned the number of lawyers graduating every year compared with the opportunities available to them. He argued that many people who study law eventually end up working outside the profession because of limited opportunities.
