President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Abuja for Europe to begin a three-week vacation as part of his annual leave.
The development was announced on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the statement, Tinubu’s first destination is London, United Kingdom.
The Presidency described the trip as a working vacation, although it did not disclose the President’s full itinerary or identify the other European countries he may visit during the three-week period.
Tinubu is expected to spend the duration of his annual leave outside Nigeria before returning to resume his official responsibilities.
According to Onanuga, the President will return to Nigeria after the vacation to participate in campaign activities ahead of the January 2027 general elections.
The trip comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. The campaign period for the presidential and National Assembly elections officially opened on August 19, 2026, putting political parties and candidates into a more active phase of their preparations.
Tinubu, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is expected to resume his political engagements after the break.
The President’s departure also comes shortly after Vice President Kashim Shettima completed an approved 12-day leave. Shettima has since resumed official duties and was in Angola representing Tinubu at an African Union summit.
The Presidency has not indicated that Tinubu has transferred presidential powers to Shettima during the vacation. Premium Times reported that Onanuga’s announcement did not address whether such a temporary transfer of power would take place.
Under Nigeria’s constitutional arrangement, a temporary transfer of presidential authority requires the President to formally notify the National Assembly when he intends the Vice President to act in his stead.
