The Nigeria Police Force has held a memorial parade in Abuja to honour 10 officers of the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) who were killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Kebbi State.
The memorial was held on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the Force Headquarters, where senior police officers, colleagues and relatives gathered to pay tribute to the fallen personnel. Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu assured the families that the sacrifices of their loved ones would not be forgotten.
The officers were killed on August 10 during an encounter with a heavily armed group of suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba Local Government Area, Kebbi State. Police operatives had intercepted the group while they were reportedly moving between Kebbi and neighbouring Zamfara State.
According to the police, the ensuing gun battle resulted in the deaths of the 10 officers, while two other police personnel were injured. Two civilians also lost their lives during the engagement.
The police said at least 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the encounter, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed. The remains of the slain officers were subsequently taken to Birnin Kebbi.
At the memorial, the IGP described the officers as personnel who paid the ultimate price while carrying out their duty to protect Nigerians. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to supporting their bereaved families and the injured officers.
The Nigeria Police Force has also vowed to intensify operations aimed at tracking down the bandits who escaped from the scene. Additional security personnel have been deployed around Sakaba and neighbouring communities to prevent the attackers from regrouping.
The police have maintained that the offensive against banditry will continue, stressing that the deaths of the officers would not weaken its resolve to protect communities in the affected areas.
The Kebbi State Government has also pledged assistance to the families of the 10 fallen officers, describing their sacrifice as a significant contribution to the security of the state.
