The Osun State Police Command has released the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, on bail following his arrest over the shooting that disrupted an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ilesa.
Adejoorin was arrested on Saturday after police tactical officers intercepted a white Lexus 350 reportedly linked to the incident. An Amotekun operative and another occupant of the vehicle were also arrested, before police identified the second occupant as the commissioner.
The shooting occurred during an APC rally in parts of Ilesa, with several people reportedly injured. Police said the incident began after a vehicle bearing registration number OSHAO4 was parked near the rally and individuals identified as Amotekun personnel allegedly emerged and opened fire.
According to the police, officers recovered exhibits including expanded cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps as part of the investigation. Authorities subsequently commenced questioning to establish the commissioner’s level of involvement in the incident.
Adejoorin’s arrest had triggered a strong reaction from the Imole Campaign Council, which accused the police of politically targeting members and supporters of the Accord Party ahead of the Osun governorship election. The council demanded his immediate release and called on the Inspector-General of Police to intervene.
The police have now released the commissioner on bail while investigations continue. His release does not amount to an exoneration, as authorities are still expected to determine what role, if any, he played in the shooting.
The incident has further heightened political tension in Osun ahead of the August 15 governorship election, with rival political camps trading accusations over violence and alleged intimidation.
