Iran has said it is preparing conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, while diplomatic efforts intensify to revive negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
The Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, said on Thursday that Tehran was drawing up a list of conditions following requests from mediators seeking to resolve the crisis.
Rezaei said an end to the regional war was among Iran’s demands. He added that Iran had reached an understanding with Oman on a proposed shipping corridor through the strait, with parts of the route passing through Iranian and Omani waters.
However, Iran has indicated that the corridor would only become operational if the United States meets its demands.
Iranian officials have previously demanded the lifting of what Tehran describes as a blockade of its ports, compensation for damage caused by the conflict and the removal of US sanctions. Tehran has also called for an end to US military threats and the withdrawal of American forces from the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, carrying roughly one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the current conflict disrupted maritime traffic. The prolonged disruption has raised concerns about global energy supplies and shipping costs.
