Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, during an attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway.

The incident occurred at about 5pm on Thursday, August 27, 2026, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area, according to the Kogi State Police Command.

The attackers reportedly emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire at motorists travelling along the highway.

A blue Toyota Corolla was later found abandoned on the road. Police said Yunusa, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead inside the car, while another occupant was abducted and taken into the surrounding bush.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident and said security agencies had launched a search operation for the abducted victim and the attackers.

The body of the deceased was evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy as police continued to pursue leads that could help identify and apprehend those responsible.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Kankarofi, ordered sustained security operations along the affected corridor and directed officers to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

The police also urged motorists and residents using the route to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.

The attack has heightened concerns about insecurity along the Itobe–Ochadamu corridor, particularly as commuters and motorists continue to face the risk of kidnapping and armed attacks on major roads in the state.

The killing of Yunusa also comes shortly after another APC chairman in Kogi State, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon of Ijumu LGA, died suddenly after collapsing during a party reconciliation meeting. His death, however, was unrelated to the latest shooting.
