Former Ondo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eyitayo Jegede, has resigned his membership of the party with immediate effect.
Jegede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, communicated his decision in a resignation letter dated August 7, 2026, addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Owode/Imuagun Ward 11, Akure South Local Government Area. The letter was obtained by journalists in Akure on Thursday.
In the brief letter, Jegede formally notified the ward leadership of his decision to leave the party and requested an acknowledgement of its receipt.
The former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State contested the governorship election under the PDP in 2016 and 2020. He lost both elections to the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, who contested under the All Progressives Congress.
Jegede’s resignation comes amid continued internal challenges and political realignments within the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Some of his political associates and loyalists had previously left the PDP for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), adding to speculation about Jegede’s next political move. However, the resignation letter itself did not state any reason for his departure or disclose the political party he intends to join.
Reports indicate that Jegede has confirmed his resignation but has yet to announce his next political destination. He is expected to disclose his plans at a later date.
His departure represents another significant loss for the PDP in Ondo State, particularly given his history as the party’s governorship candidate in two elections.
The development is also likely to generate fresh speculation about the political realignment taking place across Nigeria ahead of 2027, with several prominent opposition figures and their supporters moving between political platforms.
