Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE have intercepted an alleged attempt to transport illicit weapons through Zak Village in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, recovering two AK-47 rifles and other items.
The operation was conducted on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during a routine stop-and-search exercise. The troops reportedly stopped a green Volkswagen Golf vehicle for inspection and discovered a specially constructed concealed compartment inside the dashboard.
According to the Nigerian Army, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into a nearby bush after troops directed him to open the concealed compartment.
The soldiers pursued the suspect and eventually apprehended him. The Army said that while the suspect was being restrained, he attempted to disarm one of the soldiers.
The troops responded, resulting in the suspect being neutralised, according to the Army’s account.
A subsequent search of the concealed compartment uncovered two AK-47 rifles and one magazine. Troops also recovered two wooden rifle butts, nine magazine pouches, two camel bags, six jungle hats, one mobile phone and one ATM card.
The Army described the operation as another success in its efforts to prevent the movement and proliferation of illegal firearms across Plateau State.
It said the recovery demonstrated the effectiveness of sustained security measures and intelligence-driven stop-and-search operations aimed at disrupting criminal networks involved in arms trafficking.
The military further stated that troops, working with other security agencies, would continue operations to secure major routes and communities and prevent criminal elements from moving weapons through the state.
