The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU renegotiated agreement, as well as unpaid salaries and allowances.
The union had earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Edo State Government and the university management, demanding that the agreement be implemented and outstanding payments made. The ultimatum expired on August 24, 2026, without the union’s demands being fully addressed.
ASUU-AAU said its decision was based on the failure to implement key provisions of the agreement, including payment of arrears and allowances owed to academic staff.
Among the union’s demands are the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and Professorial Allowance, alongside salary arrears arising from the new salary structure.
The 2025 renegotiated agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU was designed to improve lecturers’ welfare, university funding and conditions of service. Its implementation began in 2026, but ASUU has complained that several state-owned universities have not received the same level of implementation as federal institutions.
ASUU National President Prof. Christopher Piwuna previously said the union was concerned about what it described as the “haphazard implementation” of the agreement by state governments. He disclosed that only about 10 state universities had fully implemented the agreement, leaving many others with outstanding obligations.
The AAU chapter’s action is part of a wider dispute affecting several state-owned universities across Nigeria. Other institutions, including Imo State University, Adekunle Ajasin University and Enugu State University of Science and Technology, have also experienced industrial action or issued strike ultimatums over similar grievances.
