The National Sports Commission (NSC) has dismissed growing speculation surrounding the future of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, insisting that the Franco-Malian tactician remains fully committed to Nigeria despite reported interest from the Algeria national team and several North African clubs. Concerns over Chelle’s future intensified after reports emerged that he had yet to sign an improved contract offered by the NSC and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The delay fuelled speculation that the 48-year-old could leave Nigeria following interest from Algeria and clubs impressed by his work with the Super Eagles.
However, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade dismissed the fears, explaining that the delay in finalising the contract is purely procedural and should not be interpreted as a lack of commitment from the coach. He stressed that discussions are progressing positively and that Chelle remains focused on continuing the Super Eagles project.
Since taking charge, Chelle has overseen 25 matches, including 15 competitive fixtures. He has recorded 10 wins in regulation time in competitive games and guided Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, earning praise for the team’s improved style of play despite missing out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The NSC expressed confidence that the contract issues will be resolved, reiterating its commitment to maintaining stability within the national team as preparations continue for upcoming international competitions, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
