Suspected bandits have attacked the official residence of the Catholic Bishop of Otukpo Diocese in Benue State, abducting a seminarian during the assault and heightening concerns over the worsening security situation in the state. The incident occurred at the bishop’s residence in the Asa III area of Otukpo Local Government Area, where the gunmen reportedly struck under the cover of darkness.
The abducted seminarian was identified as Mr. Kelvin Ochai. Confirming the incident, the Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Rev. Fr. Joseph Aboyi Itodo, said the attack had deeply saddened the Catholic community. He disclosed that the bishop had called on the faithful and people of goodwill to pray fervently for the seminarian’s safe and unconditional release.
In a statement issued after the attack, the Diocese entrusted the victim and all other kidnapping victims across the country to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, expressing hope for their speedy and safe return. The Church also appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the seminarian and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The latest abduction adds to growing concerns over attacks targeting religious institutions and communities in parts of Nigeria. Benue State has witnessed a series of kidnappings and violent attacks in recent months, prompting repeated calls from religious leaders and residents for stronger security measures to protect lives and property.
As of the latest reports, no group had claimed responsibility for the attack, while security agencies had yet to announce any arrests. Efforts to locate and rescue the abducted seminarian are ongoing, with the Catholic Diocese urging Nigerians to remain united in prayer and support for all victims of insecurity across the country.
